Elec 431 - Initial Project Proposal

Objective:

To use filter banks, psychoacoustic analysis, and wavelets in order to perform compression on audio signals. First, our group wants to take an audio signal and run it through a set of filter banks. We can then convert the audio signal using wavelets and perform psychoacoustic analysis on it for the purpose of trying to compress the audio signal. We would then use distortion analysis to compare the compressed audio signal to the orignal audio signal.

Motivation:

We are hoping that we get better psychoacoustic analysis of the waveform using wavelets rather than the Fourier Transform or Discrete Cosine Transform.

Approach:

  • Talk to Dr. Schuller
  • Write Matlab Filter Bank code
  • Research simple psychoacoustic analysis methods
  • Write our own version of this analysis method
  • See what gives us the best compression
  • Learn about bit allocation (write code to allocate bits)
